Day 11 July 15, 2021
This morning when we went to leave Scotts Bluff the car wouldn’t start.. I started to worry thinking we’re so close to the Black Hills, will we have to tow it there? It acted like gas wasn’t getting into the carburetor. but when Steve took it apart it looked fine. Another indication that gas wasn’t going where it should was that the spark plugs were dry when they shouldn’t have been. even after choking the car. Steve was baffled, but he tinkered around with it a little more when all of a sudden it started! I asked what he did and he said he had no idea, but I think it’s his magic touch! So off we went with fingers crossed that it would continue to run until we reached Ghost Canyon Get Away.
Our drive was much like yesterday. Flat land and straight roads with the exception of a couple interesting sights to break up the monotony. One was in Alliance, NE where we saw a huge railroad yard with trains loaded with coal . I texted my friend who worked for BNSF and he said the coal comes from the mines in MT and WY. The second point of interest was the impressive sight of the miles of wind generators slowly turning in the wind.
Finally, we crossed the boarder into SD and soon we were in the town of Hot Springs , the beginning of the Black Hills from the South.. As we drove through Custer National Park we saw herds of buffalo grazing in the distance. We didn’t stop to take pictures today as we were on a mission to get to Ghost Canyon.
As we drove to our destination we were once again driving on narrow scenic winding roads, but this time not at the elevation of the Rockies nor the steep drop offs. We arrived at Ghost Canyon around noon. While we waited for our family to arrive, we sat outside in the refreshing cooler weather than that of NM and CO and relaxed.
Our kids and grandkids arrived around 4pm and after settling in we began to make our plans for the next couple of days. Tonight my daughter, Rachel, myself and the grandkids went to Keystone. A tourist mecca. My oldest granddaughter is a shopper just like me and we had the most fun spending time and money there.
Pictures below: Our car in front of where we’re staying at Ghost Canyon, picture below that is our grandson amusing himself while we shop, last picture is my daughter and granddaughters taking it easy. Tomorrow will be a busy day with lots of activities for us all to enjoy.
