Day 14 July 18
It was another beautiful summer morning in the Black Hills as we all left Ghost Canyon for home. The time went too fast to do all we wanted to, but the memories we made will last forever.
As the kids drove 8 to 9 hours straight to get home, our first stop was at Wall Drug in the town of Wall, SD. This is another one of my required stops for me to go on this trip because Wall Drug is a roadside attraction and tourist stop! Wall Drug consists of a collection of cow-boy themed stores, including a drug store, gift shops and several restaurants. It also has several western wooden statues sitting on benches. Since our first trip to Wall in 1976, Steve has always had his picture taken sitting next to the Saloon Hall girl, and of course we had to take another to add to his collection!
Unbeknownst to me, Steve had his own agenda for this trip. To leave Wall he needed to get to highway 14, but there isn’t a way to get there unless you travel on the freeway for a few miles. The last time we did that a semi almost ran us over, so this time Steve found a road..
It was an abandoned road that had once been paved, but it was obvious that was years ago. At first the road wasn’t too bad, but as we drove along it only got worse. At one point the road made a steep dipp and turned. The road had disappeared and I was afraid to go further. Steve stopped the car and got out to check what lied beyond and if we can make it. He found the road again and we continued on. About 5 miles later ,with a sigh of relief, we turned to get on highway 14 . I think that road scared me more than the mountain driving. In the mountains you knew where you were going. And you could see the roads. The abandoned road was a mystery . You never knew what to expect.
The rest of the drive for today was pretty mundane and I fell asleep for part of it. My biggest complaint was the heat. We stopped for lunch in Pierre just to cool off in the air conditioning.
Tonight we’re staying in Huron, SD and tomorrow we’re home!
