Day 5 July 9
These last couple of days have been my reward for taking this trip in the “A”. I have been in shoppers paradise!
Steve and I made an agreement a few years ago that I would take a trip in the “A” only if we visited certain places that I wanted to go to. Steve wanted to go to Durango, CO and I wanted to go just a little farther to Taos and Santa Fe.
46 years ago my sister, niece and my 1 year old son drove from Minneapolis to San Diego, where my sister lives. On the way we stopped in Taos and Santa Fe and I’ve always wanted to go back. Taos was wonderful, but Santa Fe is my kind of dream. Every street is geared for tourists, so while I shop Steve occupies himself by sitting in the plaza square striking up conversations with whomever happens to sit by him. Sort of like Forest Gump.
Santa Fe is one of the richest historic, artistic and cultural areas in Northern New Mexico, so before my shopping adventure began Steve and I took a guided Santa Fe city trolley tour. I have never been to a city with more sculptures on every corner, in the plaza and at all the artist shops. For every one sculpture there must have been 100 more. Besides the sculptures the tour also hit upon the history of Santa Fe and it’s architecture. We learned that Santa Fe’s buildings can only be 2 colors, clay and white washed. All the structures must look like pueblo adobes and no structure can be taller than the Cathedral Basilica of St Francis of Assisi. It was a good tour and always fun to learn about the area.
After lunch at a French Café, we walked back to our B & B where Steve decided to nap after the long day of sitting on a park bench! Tonight we’re going back to the plaza where there will be music and maybe more shopping for me!
