We left this morning in cool overcast weather that lasted till noon, then it started to warm up eventually to 91 degrees. The day was much like yesterday with steady driving. Today, though Steve only drove 45-47mph on back roads and some highways and we didn’t have any problems.
We stopped for gas and once again lunch on the go. We did see 3 interesting sights along the road. Two we stopped at and 1 we did not.
The first stop was at a covered bridge built in 1866. It carried traffic until 1934. In 1935 the Illinois division of highways purchased the bridge and it became a feature structure in Henderson County’s rest stop. In 1975 it was placed on the National Register of Historic places.
When flood waters in 1982 washed it downstream the citizens of Henderson County salvaged the bridge and raised it 3 ½ feet to where it stands today. Neither Steve nor I walked across the bridge. The inside was weathered and dark. It didn’t look safe enough for me and kind of gave me the creeps.
The second stop we came to was an old, but well maintained gas station. Of course, Steve had to have his picture with the car in front of it.
The third interesting sight we only drove by. Along one of the back roads we came across a herd of buffalo. We’re used to seeing cows, and buffalo isn’t the norm.
Steve hit another milestone with mileage on the car. It turned 60,000 somewhere in Iowa.
Steve’s oldest sister and her husband saw Betty today. When Betty saw his sister she said, “This must be bad if you’re here!” Even in her declining state, Betty still has her wits about her.
Throughout the day Steve talked to his sister and the doctors that are attending his mom. It has been decided she will go into hospice care once we return.
Tomorrow we should be home in the early afternoon.
