The Road to Nashville Day 7

June 23, 2022

We hadn’t even left Nashville when Steve got a phone call for the Summit Place where his mother lives. She didn’t feel good and didn’t want to get up. Then less than hour later he got another call saying she was unresponsive and she was going to the hospital. Needless to say Steve was anxious and upset as he waited to hear from a doctor. Another hour passed and a nurse advised calling the family together. While Steve drove I made the appropriate calls to his sisters and our children. The doctors think she may have had a stroke, but there isn’t anything to do for her.

In the afternoon some family members came to see Betty and she did wake up. Betty was able to carry a conversation for a while, but then got confused and fell asleep. Steve’s oldest sister and her husband are flying in tonight from Florida.

As for us, Steve drove fast and furious most of the day with only stops for gas and lunch on the go. We made a quick stop at the Burl Ives gravesite, which was on the way, but all of our other plans had to be canceled. Even with driving 12 hours a day we won’t arrive home until Saturday.

Steve is a slow learner. I know he wants to get home, but I didn’t want him to drive on the 4 lane highways at 50-55mph, but he did and guess what? We had another flat tire. This time it was the opposite back tire and no good Samaritans or policemen stopped to help. Luckily, we were only a few miles from the motel we’re staying at tonight.

I think Steve has learned his lesson that from now on he has to drive slower and not on highways. He hasn’t got another spare and if we get another flat we will be towed.

We have 526 miles to go and tomorrow will be another long day of driving.
