The Road to Mt Pleasant Day 2

September 1, 2022

The one thing I will say for the Decker B&B is that the bed was heavenly. It was so comfortable I didn’t want to get up and I because breakfast was served at 9, I could sleep in.

Only one other couple stayed there last night and we met them at breakfast. They were from England and were in Mason City to visit their son, who lives there.

As we talked, one thing led to another and to my surprise the woman and I are both doll collectors! There’s something about being a doll collector that when you find another person with the same interest you are immediately soulmates. We can talk dolls and not feel weird. We can also relate to the comments from friends and family about having too many dolls or what happens to them when you die, etc. I guess it doesn’t matter where you live you experience the same feelings and it was fun to meet her.

By 10 we had left the B&B and started driving south to Mount Pleasant. It was another sunny cloudless day as we drove through the farmlands of Iowa. Today was mainly a driving day with the exception of a few stops for gas. As we drove through a small town I spotted the Retro Rooster, an antique/gift shop, and Steve being the good guy that he is, stopped so I could look around and shop. We stayed just long enough for me to find a treasure and stretch our legs, then back in the car we went.

We have had the good fortune of very few detours on this trip, but one we came upon held us up for about 15 minutes. The road we were on was being tarred and only one lane was open to traffic. Our car was first in line waiting to go. While we waited the woman road crew worker holding the stop/slow sign came over to admire our car. For the next 15 minutes we talked about the car and then her life. She helped the wait time go fast, but after hearing her story we feel very blessed to have the life we have.

Finally at 5pm, we reached The Americ Inn in Fairfield, IA. The motel is about ½ hour away from Mount Pleasant and it’s where we’ll stay for the next two nights. Steve whose become absent minded couldn’t find his driver’s license for checking in. He thought he’d left it at home, but after about an hour of racking his brain he remembered he’d tucked it in a special place in his wallet. At least it wasn’t under the hood of the car! Haha.

I talked to one of the guests at the motel and the first thing he asked me was if I was going to the Mount Pleasant threshing show. He had been there today and was going back for a concert tonight. He said he had really enjoyed it. Tomorrow we’ll get up early to be at the threshing show by 8 and hopefully we’ll enjoy it too.

Because of so few stops I only took 2 pictures. One is of trees, but if you use your imagination it looks like a lizard or something, especially because of the spot from the windshield. The second I sent to my daughter who is a dental hygienist. It’s pretty funny. I hope to take more pictures tomorrow.
