Lincoln Highway
Day 9
Before I write anything else, I must apologize for my mistake to all of Steve’s Model A friends about yesterday’s car trouble. I thought Steve had said the starter was bad, but in reality it was the ignition switch. He said a wire had come loose and all he needed to do was re-attach it. I, of course, know nothing about cars, so starter, ignition switch, same difference to me. . With that now said, I’ll write about today’s events.
Steve was up at 6am and went immediately to the car and began to repair it. I’m not sure when it was done as I was still in bed, but it’s ready to go. We are staying one more day with my cousins and Monday we’ll began the last leg of our journey on the Lincoln Highway.
We had a relaxing morning visiting and around 10:00 am we started our trek up the mountain in a modern car and headed to the Donner- Read and Lincoln Highway museum.
The museum is located high in the Sierra Nevada mountains in the Lake Tahoe region. Unlike driving the Model A, climbing to an elevation 7 or 8 thousand feet in a modern car is a breeze. No chugging up the narrow winding roads at 12 – 15 mph.
The museum is small, but very informative. Part of it is about the Donner party and the other part is about the building of Lincoln Highway. We spent about 3 hours there before heading to Truckee, a quaint tourist town. My cousin Linda. and I did a little shopping and then we all enjoyed an ice cream cone or milk shake. It was fun, but we didn’t stay long as my cousins were anxious to show us more of the beautiful scenery of the Lake Tahoe area.
Lake Tahoe is a popular region for biking , hiking and boating. The Lake is the is second deepest freshwater lake in the country and is 6225 above sea level. We drove to a look-out above Emerald Bay. This stop was filled with tourists enjoying the breathtaking view below where we saw many boats on the lake.
It was a beautiful day and we appreciated our cousin’s hospitality in showing us the area that we’ve read and heard so much about past and present.
Returning back to their home we enjoyed more reminiscing and fellowship together. Tomorrow will be another day of fun as they show us Virginia City.
