Lincoln Highway Part 1
Day 2 June 17, 2023
Today was a very long day and we didn’t do or see anything fun or exciting.
I love our road trips because driving on back roads you see unusual sights and we stop often for photo ops. The Lincoln Highway is a highway. You drive and go through small towns. Sometimes the highway shows the original road, but it’s always a dirt road, which Steve doesn’t want to drive on.
Steve has a map on his phone showing where the Lincoln Highway markers, murals or other points of interest are. The problem is there is no address so we have to find them. Kind of like a treasure hunt, but not as fun. We end up driving in circles to find these things and we’ve made too many U-turns to count!
When we got to Grand Island I got excited because we saw Henry Fonda was born there and you could tour his house. Well, yes his house was there, but it’s in a bigger museum called the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer. It was still open, but would close in an hour and the cost was $26 for us to go. We could never cover the whole museum in that time so we didn’t go. Steve then remembered there was an old gas station on the Lincoln Highway somewhere in Grand Island. After searching for a half hour, we found it! Another picture for Steve!
Kearny, NE was the next big town and we decided to stay the night. Once we check into a motel we usually find a restaurant to eat dinner. I refused to eat fast food so to appease me we went to the Triple Margarita for a good Mexican meal and a Margarita, of course!
As we were leaving the restaurant Steve commented the steering was really hard. He wondered did he have a flat tire? Well, yes as a matter of fact, he did! We weren’t far from the motel so we drove back there and he changed the tube on the tire. This year he brought 3 tubes just in case of flats. I think we get flats because he’s driving the car too fast at 50mph. Last year the same thing happened twice on a highway driving at that speed. He’ll never learn!
Tomorrow we spend another day driving in Nebraska. Steve promised me we’ll find more interesting things to stop at than Lincoln Highway markers!
