Lincoln Highway Day 19

Lincoln Highway

Day 19

I’m so glad we had our cousins to stay with. After a good nights rest, Steve was up at 6am and fixed all the problems with the car. Tomorrow we should be ready to leave and hopefully the car will be good until we get home.

As Steve was busy working on the car the rest of us slept on. By the time he came in we were slowly getting up, drinking coffee and planning the day. We decided to go out for breakfast . Linda wanted us to go to a really cute restaurant called The Cup, but it was closed. The next choice was IHOP, because it was open!

Linda wanted to show us more of the area and she thought the Washoe State Park was in interesting and pretty place to go. The drive was scenic, but a different kind of scenery than the mountains. The land was flat with long grasses waving in the breeze

This Park is known for its migratory bird observation. We definitely heard birds, but only saw one in a tree. It looked like a big Robin to me. There were also trails for walking and one such trail we followed to a seven foot wooden platform. As we stood on the platform we saw a couple of wild horses grazing in the distance. You could also see Slide Mountain and Washoe Lake.

Slide Mountain is so named because of the repeated large landslides that occur high on the mountains east side. The area of the slide has no trees and vegetation and is covered in granite rock and sand. This gives the barren slopes a whitish color. The most recent slide was in May of 1983.

Washoe Lake, is a shallow lake with a maximum depth of 12 feet . In spite of this, it is a popular recreational area and many people go there to camp and enjoy the lake.

The rest of the afternoon we spent back at my cousins home. After resting up we went to downtown Reno to the scenic Truckee Riverwalk for dinner. The Riverwalk District is home to shops, boutiques, art galleries, restaurants and bars. We ate outside at the Wild River Restaurant where the food was great and so was the people watching!

Ken and Linda then took us to the Wilbur D May Arboretum and Botanical Garden’s Dragon Lights. We walked a lighted path that featured 39 larger than life illuminated sculptures. These displays were crafted by Chinese artisans and were amazing. We enjoyed our time spent there before heading back to their home to watch the fireworks on their patio.

The view of the fireworks from the patio wasn’t very good, but we lucked out as a family with several children lit fireworks in the parking lot. They weren’t the kind that exploded in the air, but they were large enough for a good show and we clapped along with the kids as they finished.

I’ve said this before, but hopefully tomorrow we will successfully begin our journey home.

A side note: This coming Saturday Steve and I will be on Paul Shinn’s YouTube Video being interviewed about our trip. You can find him at www.paulshinn.us

The second thing I wanted to mention is I’ve started another Facebook Page called Model A Adventures. I’m just posting pictures, pretty much the same as what you’re getting, but if yours don’t come through you might try seeing them there. I have a link, but you can try finding the page in a group and hopefully you will see it. This is what I have for a link. I hope it works. 100094261063227&mibextid=QQJ4d
