Lincoln Highway
Day 17
It’s so nice when you’re staying at someone’s house. You can wake up without feeling the pressure of go, go, go. Instead, you leisurely get up, sit around visiting with each other and drinking coffee before we get dressed and start the day. This morning Steve was sitting outside at 6am enjoying the 77 degree weather, by 8am it was already 91 and steadily climbing. We were in for another scorcher of a day.
After breakfast Paul wanted to redo our first interview and this time we were in his garage. Paul is a real genius when it comes to making his YouTube videos. He said after doing over 200+ he better know what he’s doing.
We have so enjoyed our stay with the Shinn’s. They’re very down to earth people that have made us feel so at home.
This morning Steve and Paul played in Paul’s “Man Cave” talking about Model A’s and later loading up his modern truck with tools for work. While the guys were in the garage Tina was doing her normal routine of tending to her garden and chickens. I stayed inside where it was cooler and relaxed.
Once we were all inside the house again Paul, who knew I loved to shop, suggested going to the town of Jackson. The town was founded in 1848 with the discovery of gold and is known for the legendary Kennedy and Argonaut mines. Jackson’s main street is now alive with tourists shopping the boutiques, antique stores and eating at tasty restaurants. We had a fun day, but I’m the only real shopper of the group so I appreciated Paul’s thoughtfulness in taking me there. Paul keeps saying he’s just an ordinary guy, but he’s also one of the kindest men (next to Steve) I know.
As we were driving to Jackson, Tina noticed a huge plume of black smoke over the next hill, about 4 miles away. It was concerning because we could see this could turn into a big fire if not put out right away. Paul and Tina debated if we should turn back just as we saw the fire trucks coming. When Tina saw the spotter and tanker planes both come she and Paul relaxed knowing it would be under control soon. When we got back we had heard 90 acres had burned before it was put out.
We are done with the Lincoln Highway for this trip and no else to visit along the way. Steve has another route planned for going home. His new goal is to hit as many of the continental 48 states as possible. Tomorrow we will be heading north towards Oregon and Washington before turning east to Idaho, Montana the Dakota’s and home. Going north the weather should be cooler
