Lincoln Highway Day 16

Lincoln Highway

Day 16

I’m going to have to start and take notes so I quit making mistakes. One mistake is only a minor spelling one. We didn’t go to Sonoma, we went to Sonora for breakfast. The other I can’t believe I totally blew off!

Last night at dusk Paul interviewed Steve and I for one of his YouTube videos. He had us standing in front of our car while he asked Steve questions about why we were driving the Lincoln Highway. The only thing I added to the interview wasn’t about the Lincoln Highway, it was what I’m always asked. No, we don’t have air conditioning in the car, unless you count rolling down the windows! Although, Paul keeps saying to us that he’s just an ordinary guy, we still think he’s a celebrity and it was exciting for us.

The first part of this trip has been comfortable driving. The weather has been cool. Yesterday, this changed and now we aren’t just hot, we’re burning up! The thermometer was reading 112 degrees yesterday, and the same today and maybe tomorrow.

This morning when we left to go and meet Paul’s car club for breakfast the temperature was in 70’s and felt pretty good, but by the time breakfast was over the heat was on. Paul was wise enough to drive us in his Ford F 150 and we rode in comfort down and around the winding hills of Sonora and the neighboring communities..

On the way to Stockton, Paul stopped at his friends Bob’s house and garage. He wanted Steve to see Bob’s Model A’s, his 1929 US mail truck and his 1931 wide box, steel roof Model A pickup truck. Bob also has in his yard a few other Model A’s in various stages of repair. Bob has recently been interviewed for Paul’s YouTube video, for all of you who follow Paul Shinn.

When we left Reno, NV we had gotten on the freeway and totally missed driving on the Lincoln Highway through Stockton. Knowing that, Paul drove us on the Lincoln Highway through town stopping for pictures along the way and also, at the Lincoln Tower which has a large rotating letter L on top of it. The Lincoln Tower was built in 1928 as a stopping place on the highway. All this stop offered was a café and gas station, then in 1951 this stop become a shopping mecca with restaurants and shops. It was nice of Paul to take the time and drive us on this highway we almost missed.

The first day of this trip I had written we stopped at an A&W in IA. Paul emailed me to say he would take us to the first A&W built in Lodi, CA. True to his word, he took us to this A&W which was celebrating 100 years in business. Inside and out it was decorated with memorabilia, but what fun would it be to reminisce if we didn’t get a frosty mug of root beer and dream of days gone by.

We were thinking of leaving tomorrow for home, but are reconsidering because of the intense heat. If we do stay one more day, heat or not we will be leaving Monday morning.
