Lincoln Highway
Day 15
This morning Jim, Nancy’s husband, cooked us a delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage and toast before we packed up the car to leave.
As we pulled out of their garage Steve let the car idol as we said our good-byes. It didn’t take long before we could hear a loud rattling noise that the car shouldn’t have been making. Steve tuned off the engine and crawled under the car to see what the problem was. A metal bracket that held the muffler in place had come off. Steve went to his “magic” toolbox and found a wire to tie the muffler back in place. Once he was under the car again he saw the bracket was there and that he needed only a nut or bolt to fix it.
It’s amazing to me that Steve was under that car less than 10 minuets and came out from underneath it with his face, hands and arms covered in grease! Luckily, we hadn’t left Nancy’s house so he could clean up before we traveled on.
Two things about today’s drive, it was relatively short, 156 miles, and extremely hot! The temperature hit 106 and we were under an extreme heat advisory. I was hot traveling in the car, but I used the cooling scarves around my neck and feet to help deal with it. Even with all the insulation by my feet, heat comes up and cooks them. If we continue to have this hot weather driving I think I’ll get a bag of ice just for my feet.
Our destination was Valley Springs, CA . Paul Shinn is the Guru of Model A’s and everyone who owns a Model A listens to his YouTube channel. Steve had written him months ago that we were driving the Lincoln Highway in his Model A and would like to stop and say hi. Paul had agreed we could stop and later invited us to a stay in their home while we were here.
I had never seen Paul, but I knew his voice because Steve watches his YouTube videos every day. I was a little embarrassed to admit when I met Paul, I have never watched his videos, but then again, I’m not a car person.
Paul’s wife, Tina, is quite a remarkable lady. Besides working as a nurses aid at the hospital she has her own Tudor ragtop Model A, that she’s working on. She also is a YouTube star, making videos about her Model A. and gardening. Her other hobbies include growing her own vegetables and fruit and raising chickens for their eggs. I like the 2 cats that live here. Their job is to catch the mice on their property and keep to Tina company as she tends the chickens and garden.
Tina also ranks as a Wonder Woman because she is brave. She killed a 4’ long rattlesnake and isn’t afraid of rats or mice! I’ve enjoyed getting to know her today and look forward to spending more time together.
Tomorrow the day will be filled with activities. First on the agenda is a Model A breakfast with Paul’s club. Later we’ll have lunch in Sonoma and finally, Paul is going to take us to where A&W got its start, in Lodi, CA.
