Lincoln Highway Day 14

Lincoln Highway

Day 14

Well, I have to apologize again to Steve’s Model A friends. I made a mistake in how Steve fixed the car to make it stop stalling.

As you know, I know nothing of cars or how to make them run and when I’m writing this, Steve is never around so I write what I remember. Obviously, I don’t remember correctly. From now on if you read something that sounds weird or wrong about fixing the car, just remember it’s me who’s writing this blog, not Steve.

Today we slept in until 7am, which was late for us. After Steve got up he took a walk with his sister, Nancy, and her dogs. They walked up some pretty steep hills before they returned home. I chose not to walk this morning and I think I made the right decision after hearing about it.

Nancy was our tour guide this morning and drove on the Bodega Highway to the town of Bodega. This is where Alfred Hitchcock filmed the movie “The Birds”. I didn’t see many houses, but I did recognize the school house from the movie, which is now someone’s home. Nancy told us that particular home/schoolhouse is said to be haunted

Continuing on we came to Bodega Bay where they filmed the rest of the movie “The Birds”. It’s a very popular place to come to and many people hike the cliffs. We were ready to hike the cliffs too, except it was too foggy. We couldn’t see across the bay and what we did see was fog. No matter, it was gorgeous and I took a lot of pictures of the ocean below us. Some people had gone down to the beach and were wading in the surf. Brrr, what brave souls, that water isn’t warm!

After we left the bay we took the scenic CA 116 highway to the town of Jenners. There we stopped to eat at the Café Aquatica, one of Nancy’s favorite restaurants. It’s a small seafood café where we ordered Calm Chowder, a Crab roll and a Salmon roll. We ate on picnic tables overlooking the Russian River.

The Russian River runs along CA 116. Every town we passed had cabins or campgrounds near or on the river. It was a beautiful area and in the summer every place is booked for vacationers to enjoy swimming, kayaking or fishing.

Nancy, knowing how I love to shop, stopped at Duncan Mills just for me. Duncan Mills had just a few stores on the side of the road. I loved shopping at the cute boutique with many artisan crafts and jewelry. Of course, I found something I couldn’t live without.

Our next stop was the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. The reserve has a visitor center and self-guided nature trail which we walked. The majestic Sequoia trees, commonly known as the coast redwood forest offers a serene beauty and solace from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The ancient redwoods are the tallest living thing on our planet. These remarkable trees live to be 500-2000 years old. They grow to a diameter of 12-16 feet and stand from 200 to 350 feet tall. We enjoyed our peaceful walk and took many pictures, before we left and headed back to Santa Rosa.

We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing in Nancy’s beautiful backyard before going out to dinner at The Belly in downtown Santa Rosa. When we came home Nancy turned the TV on and we watched Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds”. I haven’t seen that movie since I was a kid. It wasn’t scary anymore just a little hokey.

Tomorrow we leave for Valley Springs, CA to visit Paul Shinn and his wife for a couple of days. Paul does a YouTube video on Model A’s that Steve watches at least once every day. Steve is excited to meet him in person. I, too look forward to meeting him, although I only know him through the emails we’ve shared since I started this blog.
