Lincoln Highway Day 13

Lincoln Highway

Day 13

Today we left our friends around 8:30 and took off for the last leg of the Lincoln Highway. Our GPS said it’d take 2 1/2 hours to get there. Steve thought he was taking a road less traveled, but it was a divided highway with lots of traffic and traffic lights. I swear we hit every one red!

The car started to die while we were stopped at some of the lights, so Steve started choking it again. Halfway to San Francisco we stopped at a gas station and he checked everything over. It all seemed good, and the car stopped dying on us after that. Steve thinks choking it did the trick and cleaned the filter.

As we got closer to San Francisco fog and a light mist descended on us. The windshield wipers rubber blade was worn out so we couldn’t use it. Finally, the fog blindness and misted windshield was too much. We were literally driving blind and it was scary. Steve pulled over on the side of the road and cleaned the windshield with Rain-X. It was better and fog was lighter so we continued on until we entered Lincoln Park, our final destination. The Lincoln Highway marker was right by the bus stop and of course a bus was sitting there. We took some pictures of the marker and when the bus moved Steve pulled his car as close as he could to the markers for a picture.

We didn’t drive through downtown San Francisco and when we were at the park everything seemed fine. I guess all the warnings we got were for the bad part of town, but it’s still good to be alert. I did see one sign posted to be aware of car vandalism. Thank you for your prayers as we didn’t have any trouble.

We left the park and drove a winding road down to the Golden Gate. We stopped along the roadside and took pictures of the car and Golden Gate bridge in the background. Before we crossed the bridge I took as many pictures as I could crossing the bridge in the fog, and I think I got some good ones.

From that point on we drove to on to Santa Rosa, where Steve’s sister lives. We arrived early afternoon and once we were settled in she drove us around the city. She pointed out where the fires of 5 years ago had burned. It’s hard to believe a fire ever burned the area and the homes that were there. Now new housing developments and businesses have sprung up to replace the burned ones. The only hint a fire ever occurred is that there are very few mature trees.

Nancy, Steve’s sister, took us to The Paradise Winery. It’s amazing to think five years ago this winery had burnt down to the ground. It was a beautiful place with a huge deck to sit on and overlook the vineyard. We enjoyed the peaceful beauty with a glass of wine and an appetizing cheese tray before she took us then to a Mexican restaurant for dinner. Tonight we relaxed at her home. Tomorrow we are going to Bodega Bay and other places for sightseeing.

Side note: I was told by one of my friends that my pictures haven’t been coming through. I don’t know why as I have been sending them. If you haven’t received any pictures for the last couple of days and would like them, please let me know. I will send a few from today and hope you all get them.
