Lincoln Highway
Day 11
We left Reno and my cousins after a delicious home cooked breakfast and started for Union City, CA where we had friends waiting for us.
As we made our way up into the Sierra Nevada Mountains I spotted a sign designating a bear crossing. That sign made me realize I’ve seen some unusual animal crossing signs on this trip, especially in NV.
In Minnesota it’s common to see duck or deer crossing signs and sometimes even turtles, but in NV I kept seeing a running horse sign and Pronghorn Sheep. I told Steve, “People must ride horses round here.” , but truth be known Reno has herds of wild horses. I only saw a few on the side of the road once, but they are around and gallop into neighborhoods. As for the sheep, I never saw any of those.
Our climb up the mountain wasn’t bad and we did 35mph most of the time . The road was wider with guardrails and many turn outs where we could let cars pass us. This road also was a lot less scary than the Guardsman’s pass. The scenery was spectacular around Lake Tahoe, but in some areas of the mountains it was also evident the fires in Tahoe came awfully close to the town and some cabins. We stopped for pictures several times for both the beauty and the devastation.
Once we were down the mountain we again had no choice, but to take the freeway. This time the freeway traffic wasn’t light. California, even in smaller towns has lots of traffic. We did our best to stay in the right lane traveling at 50mph while all the cars and trucks literally zoomed by us. The wind was back too, blowing us around. Poor Steve again fought to keep the car on the road. As much as I hate freeway driving in the Model A, I’m getting used to it, but it doesn’t mean I like it.
We made it to Union City and it was still relatively early. We saw a motel checked in and then went to our friends house. I should know communication is everything and I really dropped the ball on it this time.
We met our friends, Malti and Harold when we went on a vacation tour to Australia and New Zealand 5 years ago and have kept up with each other through FB and messaging. Malti has always given us an open invitation to stay at their house if we came to the bay area.
When I told her we were coming she said Harold had had a stroke and wasn’t too good. Instead of asking more questions, I assumed they wouldn’t want us to stay. When will I learn you should NEVER assume? When we arrived we found out Harold was recovering quite well and Malti was expecting us to stay at their house, not one night, but two!. We tried to explain we’d already checked into a motel, but she was insistent we stay with them. Steve went back to the motel for the luggage and after he explained the situation to the motel manager, he was given a refund for the room. What a nice surprise!
With the misunderstanding of staying 2 nights, are final destination to Lincoln Park will now be on Wednesday June 28th .
With the extra day in Union City we’re going to a Charlie Chaplin museum and then explore the area around it.
One last side note: It’s freezing here! I packed summer clothes and have only been wearing long pants and that wonderful sweatshirt I got in Park City!
